Here is my story… how my journey brought me to Speech Language Pathology, this profession I love so much! I was born and raised in Interior Alaska, a land of extremes and great beauty. Raised in a log cabin my parents built, I learned important skills that continue to guide me, both in my work and my daily life. Skills such as [Resourcefulness, Independence, Hard Work, and “Being Prepared”. I also gained a great appreciation for Nature and… ]. [Transition & EDIT - SHORTEN] Speech Pathology found me, not by my choice, but as the result of one of the most difficult times in my life. In 2005, my teen-age daughter was in a (adjective) motorcycle accident. [She was slowly negotiating a left turn against oncoming traffic, and pulled in front of a vehicle traveling around 40 mph. She had multiple broken bones, was unconscious for 2-3 days… and she had experienced a Mod-Severe TBI with the classic brain MRI characteristics of “Diffuse axonal shearing” (tearing of the brain's long connecting nerve fibers as the brain shifts and rotates inside the bony skull). My daughter received excellent hospital care for her multiple broken bones and they began to heal quickly. However, it was the work of the skilled Speech Language Pathologists in the Anchorage rehab hospital and in Fairbanks after we returned home, who taught us about the extensive work ahead of us, supporting her in regaining speech, good judgment, and, what she wanted most, Independence. As I participated in my daughter’s recovery, I began to learn about the complexity and ??? of the brain. Two years later I started my journey towards obtaining a Masters degree in Communication Sciences and Disorders, graduating in 2011 thanks to a collaborative distance education program (University of Alaska Anchorage and East Carolina University - Go Pirates!).
